Netra Tharpanam is a rejuvenation treatment for the eyes. Eyes are bathed in a pure form of medicated ghee for about 2 to 10 minutes. The treatment strengthens the optical nerves, prevents cataract and gives a cooling effect to the eyes. The treatment reduces pain and burning sensation in the eyes.This cures dry eye syndrome and strengthens the eye muscles. The patient is made to lie on his/her back on the dhroni and a paste of black-gram mixed with lukewarm water is formed in a receptacle around the orbit and a specially prepared oil medicated with Brimhana Dravyas is poured over the eyes; the eyes are blinked for a minimum time of approximately 35 minutes gradually increasing day by day for a maximum time of 50 minutes and gradually decreasing vice-versa. This is often repeated for 7-21 days.

Other names for Netra Tarpana:-
Akshi Tarpana / Akshi Tarpanam – Same as Netra Tarpana (Akshi synonymous with Netra)Netra Vasti – Vasti means pooling. Medicated oil or ghee is filled in a flour compartment (vasti) constructed around the eye / eyes and left in place for a fixed duration of time. This procedure nourishes and strengthens the eyes, cures the eye diseases. The procedure is same in Netra Tarpana.Netra Basti – Same as Netra Vasti (Vasti is synonymous with Basti).The word Netra Tarpana points towards the utility of the treatment and the terms Netra Vasti / Basti points towards the construction and procedure.
